Job Description

Fire Watch Assistant

Join Carter Burden Network as a Fire Watch Assistant! Are you detail-oriented, vigilant, and passionate about protecting others? The Carter Burden Network (CBN) is looking for a responsible and dedicated Fire Watch Assistant to help safeguard the Leonard Covello Older Adult Center in East Harlem!

About Us: CBN champions the well-being, safety, and dignity of older adults through a rich array of services, advocacy, and community programs. Join a team that truly makes a difference in the lives of New Yorkers 60 and older.

The Opportunity: As a Fire Watch Assistant, you'll play a vital role in a two-person team ensuring fire safety compliance at a NYC Aging-owned building. Your primary responsibility: maintain vigilant fire watch coverage until the building's alarm system is restored. You'll embody CBN's core values—accountability, kindness, teamwork, and integrity—while helping ensure a safe environment for our community.

What You'll Do:

  • Conduct regular patrols and inspections of all floors and stairwells
  • Monitor for fire hazards and respond swiftly to emergencies
  • Maintain detailed, FDNY-compliant fire watch logs
  • Collaborate closely with your partner and communicate with clarity and professionalism
  • Support evacuations and emergency procedures as needed

Who You Are:

  • FDNY F-01 Certificate of Fitness holder (or able to obtain within 30 days of hire)
  • 1-3 years' experience in fire watch, security, or building maintenance
  • Clear communicator, attentive, reliable, and a true team player
  • Available to work assigned shifts. You must remain fully accessible via phone and email during scheduled hours and be available on-site or in the field as required

Role Details:

  • Part-time, hourly roles with flexibility to cover when team members are out. Two shifts are available:
    • 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
    • 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
  • Leonard Covello Older Adult Center, 312 East 109th St, New York, NY.

Physical Requirements:

  • Walk and patrol for extended periods
  • Climb stairs in a five-story building
  • Use visual and auditory senses to identify hazards

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly rate: $18–$24 per hour, in full compliance with the NYC Pay Transparency Act. Final compensation is based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
  • This role is not eligible for group-sponsored health benefits.
  • Earn up to 8.5 vacation days, 2 personal days, 5.5 sick days, and paid holidays (when they fall on a regularly scheduled workday).
  • Participation in a 403(b) retirement plan with a 3% employer contribution. After one year, you'll also be eligible for a matched contribution. (eligibility rules apply)
  • Enjoy a supportive work culture that encourages professional development, training, mentorship, and growth opportunities.

Ready to make a real impact and help keep our community safe? Apply today and join a team that values your commitment, vigilance, and compassion!

To Apply: Submit a single PDF addressed to Mara Carrasco, Program Director, that includes your resume. All applicants will be considered for both shifts; preference for the weekday or weekend shift can be noted in your application.

Qualified applicants will be contacted by a member of our search committee. Finalists will be asked to provide three professional references (including one former supervisor) and complete a pre-hire background screening.
